The facade of the new job shattered instantly. They were only given office duties on the very first day. After that, Spiderman worked for a mere three days before taking a leave of absence, leaving Barbie Girl to bear the entire grueling burden alone. She was forced to work 15-hour shifts every single day. Shockingly, she was forced into the role of a domestic maid, even though she had never applied for such a position—she was the legal wife of a Malaysian citizen, not a hired helper like Arcel. In a bizarre and suspicious arrangement, she was forced to wash the clothes of the funeral boss, the boss's wife, and even Arcel's clothes altogether. Her daily torture included sweeping, heavy cleaning, scrubbing toilets, and sometimes guarding dead bodies until midnight. Realizing she was trapped in modern slavery, Barbie Girl repeatedly begged Spiderman to leave before her physical strength completely failed. But Spiderman stubbornly refused, using the excuse that he hadn't received his salary yet.

The dark truth behind this trap was soon revealed when the funeral boss showed Barbie Girl his chat logs with Spiderman. To her horror, Spiderman had been bitterly badmouthing her, spinning a narrative that Barbie Girl was deeply impoverished and that he had only married her out of pity. He even provided a blog link detailing Barbie Girl's humble background and sent numerous photos of her to the boss, effectively treating his own wife like a piece of property to be traded. He thought Barbie Girl was just the same as the Filipina prostitute whom he had financially kept and supported from 2013 to 2020. Fortunately, the funeral boss realized that Barbie Girl was the true victim, recognizing how a pure, beautiful, and innocent virgin woman had been entirely manipulated into marrying an old, toothless man who pathetically fantasized that he was handsome and wealthy. This dark manipulation explained why the funeral boss would constantly use harsh words to scold Barbie Girl, arrogantly throwing dirty insults at her. Every time the boss scolded her, he would use foul words like, "This job is easy, easier than making a baby." Facing this humiliation, Barbie Girl bravely fired back, admitting her humble background but exposing the truth: Spiderman was far poorer, living in a house with no water, no electricity, and unpaid taxes. She chose raw honesty over his fake wealth.

Spiderman’s delusional pride was heavily exposed at the workplace. He continuously pretended to be wealthy in front of the funeral boss, acting as if he didn't even need the job and was only there to help Barbie Girl secure employment. His arrogance was so unbearable that he would aggressively talk back to the boss—the same toxic attitude that had caused him to be rejected from every other job application, leaving it a complete mystery how Changi Airport had ever employed him in the past. His foolishness reached peak levels when he mistakenly heard a neighbor crying. He quickly called the funeral boss, excitedly declaring, "There is a death in the front house, our business will increase!" When his prediction turned out to be completely false, he cowardly blamed Barbie Girl for feeding him wrong information.

His complete lack of manners and basic intellect did not go unnoticed. During staff lunches, Spiderman was the only one strictly forbidden from sitting at the same table with the funeral boss. The boss explicitly told Barbie Girl that he was completely out of sync with Spiderman, stating that the man behaved as if he had never gone to school, lacked basic manners, and seriously needed a psychiatric evaluation. Whenever work tasks were taught, Spiderman would listen idly and immediately order Barbie Girl or other workers to execute the orders, living completely in his delusion of grandeur. Consequently, when the staff took a trip to the Cameron Highlands during a work break, Spiderman was deliberately left behind. Instead, he chose to travel back to his hometown, foolishly spending hundreds of Ringgit on bus fares before even receiving his first paycheck. His toxicity peaked during car rides; whenever they spotted a dirty area, Spiderman’s mouth would instantly attack, making derogatory comments like "They are Indonesians, that's why it's dirty," completely blind to the tragic, filthy reality of his own home which was far worse...

Armed with the new 3-month spouse visa, they remained highly active in searching for a financial sponsor. Yet, Spiderman’s unbearable arrogance remained completely unchanged. He constantly twisted the facts, boldly claiming he deeply regretted marrying Barbie Girl, shouting that if he hadn't wed her, his life wouldn't be this miserable and his money wouldn't be gone. It was no wonder people almost punched him in the mouth three times on the streets of Medan. Spiderman threatened her with divorce dozens of times, and at one point, he even violently choked Barbie Girl's neck.

During this vulnerable time, Barbie Girl also fell victim to fraudulent job offers online that promised high income using just a mobile phone. These scams maliciously used the names of famous brands like Shopee, Lazada, and Traveloka. The tasks seemed simple—just giving likes to items—and they did transfer some initial money. However, at the end of the assignment, Barbie Girl was ordered to transfer her own money to unlock the next task with a bigger salary. Naturally, she couldn't do it because she only held Indonesian Rupiah, not Malaysian Ringgit. Despite this, Barbie Girl remained active as an Instagram influencer and successfully earned some Ringgit. The moment Spiderman found out, he seized that money to register as a Grab driver, rent a car, and pay more than two hundred Ringgit for documents. Cruelly, after getting everything settled, he abandoned the plan entirely and never became a driver. It felt as if he deliberately did all of this just to drain her money and crush Barbie Girl's spirit.

The plot grew significantly darker when Spiderman spotted a job advertisement in a WhatsApp group. Coincidentally, he shared this group with none other than Shahrukh Khan—the very man who had extorted them at JPN during their wedding. The advertisement sought a driver for a funeral home who had to be on-call at all times, with accommodation provided at a hostel right in front of the parlor, owned by the funeral boss. Intrigued, Spiderman called the funeral boss. The boss called back and became intensely interested, especially upon discovering that Spiderman's wife was a Chinese-Indonesian woman. The boss repeatedly pressured Spiderman to visit his office immediately and to bring his wife along. Packing their belongings, they set off. Spiderman contacted his male cousin, Arif, who kindly agreed to pick them up at the bus terminal. They stayed for one night at Arif's house before Arif drove them straight to the funeral boss's office.

Upon arriving at the office, they encountered an Indonesian maid named Arcel, who falsely claimed she was from Bali when she was actually from Flores, seemingly ashamed of her true hometown. Out of nowhere, the funeral boss hired both Spiderman and Barbie Girl on the spot that very day. Barbie Girl was completely shocked because she had never applied for the job; only Spiderman had applied to be a driver over the phone. She had no idea what secret arrangement Spiderman had made behind her back during that initial call, which explained why the boss had been so desperately insisting that Spiderman bring his wife along.

The situation turned deeply alarming when the funeral boss demanded to keep Barbie Girl’s passport under the guise of "security." Barbie Girl firmly refused and said, "Ask for my husband's permission first." To her utter horror, Spiderman instantly gave his approval, allowing the boss to hold his wife's passport as if they shared a dark secret they were deliberately hiding from her. Following this, Arcel handed them work uniforms to wear. Barbie Girl naturally refused to put them on because the clothes were foul and unwashed, left dirty by previous workers. However, Arcel insisted it was fine. Arcel then maliciously complained to the funeral boss, twisting the story to claim that Barbie Girl was problematic. The funeral boss went to Spiderman, complaining about Barbie Girl's appearance and hygiene. True to his toxic nature, Spiderman didn't utter a single word to defend his innocent wife, leaving her completely vulnerable and isolated...

With no financial sponsor to secure her residency, the couple was forced to leave Malaysia temporarily, taking a short one-day trip to Dumai, Indonesia. Spiderman blissfully treated the journey as a romantic mini-honeymoon. For Barbie Girl, however, it was the beginning of a grueling mission: finding a local financial sponsor. Upon their return, she desperately turned to various Facebook groups for foreigners married to Malaysians, seeking someone willing to help them. But bad luck struck again. A malicious group member falsely branded her a scammer, sending direct messages to other users to launch a coordinated online assault. This vicious smear campaign resulted in Barbie Girl being completely banned from every single support group.

As her monthly visa ticked away, Spiderman’s extended family—whom he had always bragged about as being incredibly wealthy and kind—offered zero help, inventing endless excuses to distance themselves. Out of options, they attempted to cross into Singapore to automatically renew her visa, but Singaporean authorities flatly rejected her entry and sent her back to Malaysia. Sensing their desperation, a sympathetic immigration officer in Johor suggested a different route: return to Indonesia and apply for a 3-month spouse visa. They traveled to Medan, Sumatra, spending an entire month there. Spiderman demanded to stay only in clean, upscale hotels—a shocking demand from a man whose own home in Malaysia resembled a filthy pigsty. Despite knowing about his past with the Filipina scammer, Barbie Girl foolishly believed his lies when he claimed he still had hidden savings and would reimburse her later. Her kindness cost her tens of millions of rupiah. Spiderman even pressured her to buy expensive plane tickets back to Malaysia, but Barbie Girl firmly refused, opting for the ferry to save her remaining funds from being completely drained.

Spiderman’s toxic and arrogant mouth nearly got him beaten up by locals in Medan on three separate occasions after making deeply offensive remarks. The angry men only backed down out of sheer respect when they saw Barbie Girl standing beside him. To minimize expenses, Barbie Girl made them walk for hours under the sun. Eventually, after a grueling journey, they secured the coveted 3-month spouse visa in Pekanbaru. They finally boarded the ferry back to Malaysia at the end of 2023. Yet, even during their departure, Spiderman’s manipulation continued. He foolishly insisted on weighing her bag at the terminal, forcing Barbie Girl to waste 30,000 rupiah for the service. The moment they reached the baggage area, Spiderman immediately demanded the bag back. It felt like a deliberate, petty act designed solely to drain her money and energy.

The sheer injustice of the situation weighed heavily on her. While Barbie Girl was being bled dry, Marry, the Filipina maid, was living like royalty in the Philippines. By weaponizing a single child fathered by her own cousin, she had successfully extorted a fortune from multiple men. Using Spiderman’s life savings alone, Marry bought a house to rent out, purchased motorcycles, luxury gold jewelry, expensive branded outfits, and fully renovated her family home. The tragedy was that Spiderman had been warned. While vacationing in the Philippines, Marry's own neighbors explicitly told him she was a professional romance scammer. Yet, blinded by manipulation, Spiderman chose to believe the scammer instead, obediently blocking the honest neighbors the moment Marry ordered him to do so, sealing his own financial doom while dragging an innocent wife into his nightmare...

They were officially married. By law, Barbie Girl was now his wife. But the grand promises of a flight to Indonesia, a luxury pre-wedding photoshoot, a lavish hotel party, a honeymoon in Japan, and a secure life crumbled into dust. The promise to reimburse her for the expensive document stamps was forgotten. Even the basic necessity of paying for electricity and running water in his haunted house remained untouched. It was all a mirage. The reality that hit them next was the harsh bureaucratic wall of immigration, and with it, Spiderman’s ultimate humiliation.

To stay in Malaysia, Barbie Girl needed a spouse visa, which required Spiderman to act as her financial sponsor. At the immigration office, Spiderman arrogantly flaunted his past Changi Airport payslips. But the officers were not easily fooled. When they checked his actual bank accounts, they found a staggering zero. He had no monthly income and absolutely no savings. In a pathetic attempt to shift the blame, Spiderman erupted in anger, accusing Barbie Girl of draining his wealth by marrying him. This sparked a fiery confrontation; Barbie Girl had never asked him for a single cent in her entire life. Even the immigration officers were left bewildered—how could a man work for over 40 years in Singapore and end up with absolutely nothing?

The bitter irony burned deep. Barbie Girl vividly remembered a recent taxi ride where Spiderman had boastfully bragged to the driver that his monthly salary was 3,500 Singapore Dollars. Now, facing total exposure, Spiderman finally confessed the dark truth. He revealed that during the period when they had first broken off their engagement, he had been targeted by a Filipina maid—let us call her Marry—who operated as part of a professional scamming syndicate and worked as a prostitute. Marry claimed she was pregnant with his child, sending fake ultrasound results obtained through a corrupt doctor. In reality, the child belonged to Marry’s own cousin in the Philippines, engineered entirely to extort money from vulnerable men like him.

From 2013 to 2020, Spiderman had been completely drained, bled dry until he was nothing but skin and bones, supporting Marry's entire extended family. He never married her, but his name was legally stamped as the father on the child’s birth certificate—a document manufactured by Marry’s own relatives. Hearing this, Barbie Girl finally understood everything. When she had sent him the photo of his picture encircled by her prayer beads years ago, Spiderman had genuinely believed she possessed indigo powers, realizing that he desperately needed her prayers to break the curse of his own making.

Sitting with the heavy truth, a profound sense of injustice washed over Barbie Girl. She remembered how cruelly he had rejected her, calling her an "old dog" and claiming she wasn't good enough because she couldn't speak fluent English. Yet, the woman he had blindly thrown all his life savings to was a professional scammer whose physical appearance was rough and masculine, and who couldn't speak proper English either. Spiderman had fallen blindly for a facade, manipulated by a scammer who daily uploaded photos on Facebook while holding a Bible, using faith as a weapon to blind a foolish man while a pure, honest heart was cast aside...

Just as Barbie Girl was learning to let go, the digital wall crumbled. Out of nowhere, Spiderman unblocked her and called. He announced that he had already booked a flight ticket for her to Malaysia. Caught in a whirlwind of mixed emotions, Barbie Girl quickly packed her bags. Once again, Spiderman’s arrogance took center stage. He boasted that immediately after their official marriage registration at the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN), they would fly to Bali for a luxury pre-wedding photoshoot and hotel party, followed by a honeymoon in Japan. He even added a sweet promise: every single cent she had spent on the grueling document process back in Indonesia would be fully reimbursed the moment she landed in Malaysia.

In August 2022, Barbie Girl flew back to Malaysia. Spiderman picked her up, and they went straight to the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Kuala Lumpur to submit her hard-earned paperwork. However, they were met with hostility. A female officer stared at them with a glaring, terrifying look, coldly rejecting the documents. She sharply told Barbie Girl to take them to the KBRI in Johor Bahru, adding a grim warning that even there, the papers might not be accepted. Stepping in with his usual pompous attitude, Spiderman blindly demanded a simple stamp on the spot. The intimidating officer obliged, costing them a pointless 50 Ringgit. Fortunately, when they finally traveled to the KBRI in Johor Bahru, the documents were accepted smoothly without a single issue.

With the embassy’s letter in hand, they proceeded to JPN to officially register their marriage. They were granted a wedding date in November 2022. To ensure her social visit visa would automatically renew and cover the two-month waiting period, they took a quick trip across the border to Singapore. However, a major obstacle soon arose: they could not find any witnesses for the legal ceremony. Desperate, a high school friend of Spiderman, whom we shall call Sally Marcelina, offered a solution. She connected them with her friend’s brother and nephew to act as the legal witnesses. For the sake of the story, let us call them Shahrukh Khan (the father) and Syahrul Khan (the son).

The day finally arrived, and they were legally wed at JPN. After the ceremony, the young witness, Syahrul Khan, eagerly offered to take photos of the newlyweds. Though they politely declined his offer, he stubbornly insisted on snapping the pictures anyway. But the joyous occasion was instantly soured right after the wedding. Syahrul Khan sent the digital photos via WhatsApp, followed by a shocking demand: he was extorting them, boldly asking for a whopping 600 Ringgit for the unsolicited photography. Stunned, Spiderman fired back, stating he thought it was a genuine act of kindness from a friend’s family, and that he never would have agreed if he knew it was a paid service. In the end, Spiderman only handed over about 150 Ringgit, leaving a bitter taste on what was supposed to be their special day...

The Red Thread and the Spiderman: The Haunted House and Broken Promises (Part 4)

Shortly after that trip, the world ground to a sudden halt. The COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, locking everyone behind closed borders. It wasn't until early 2022 that international flights finally reopened. Out of nowhere, Spiderman resurfaced with a shocking declaration: he wanted to marry Barbie Girl. Stunned, Barbie Girl replied with complete honesty, telling him she no longer desired marriage as she had already reached menopause. Yet, Spiderman pleaded with absolute earnestness. He assured her that her life would be fully secure with him. He even promised that they could try IVF, or she could adopt a child in Indonesia and bring them to Malaysia. After seeking answers through deep prayer, Barbie Girl finally agreed to give it one last chance.

Barbie Girl packed her bags and flew to Malaysia. She was picked up by Spiderman, who had recently retired from his job in Singapore and moved back to his home country. However, the moment she arrived at his residence, she was struck by sheer horror. The place looked exactly like a haunted house. It was filthy, chaotic, and completely overtaken by wild bushes and creeping weeds. Worst of all, there was no electricity and no running water. Barbie Girl had never seen anyone of Chinese descent live in such extreme poverty—a jarring contrast to the wealthy persona he had painted over WhatsApp. With a sweet, manipulative smile, he told her not to worry, claiming they would pay off the utility bills right after the wedding.

They went to the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) to register their marriage, but their application was flatly rejected because her documents lacked the necessary official stamps. This setback forced Barbie Girl to return to Indonesia immediately to stamp her paperwork and renew her passport. Back home, she worked tirelessly every single day to get everything in order. Meanwhile, Spiderman would call her constantly, sweet-talking her with grand promises of a dream pre-wedding photoshoot in Bali and a lavish celebration party at a luxury hotel once their JPN registration was complete.

But the sweet talk quickly turned toxic. Spiderman began issuing aggressive threats, warning that he would cancel the wedding if she did not speed up the process. The dark, familiar insults weaponized once again. He screamed that she was nothing but a stubborn "old dog." In a terrifying display of control, he forced her to type out a written statement admitting that she was a dog. After humiliating her, he blocked her number entirely. Barbie Girl was left completely stranded, having just spent tens of millions of rupiah to prepare dozens of legal documents, each requiring two expensive official stamps as mistakenly demanded by the embassy. The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) had inadvertently made the process incredibly difficult and costly because they had mistakenly applied the strict rules meant for Muslim marriages, rather than Buddhist ones.

Cut off and blocked without warning, Barbie Girl was left helpless. Her mind raced to her two suitcases still sitting inside Spiderman’s desolate, haunted house. They contained her valuable gold jewelry. She faced a painful dilemma: should she find a way to retrieve them, or leave them behind? In the end, Barbie Girl chose her peace of mind. She decided to let them go completely, viewing the abandoned belongings and the lost gold as a final sacrifice to cast away the bad luck and cut the toxic ties forever...

The ride to Changi Airport inside the taxi was drowned in heavy tears. Barbie Girl wept bitterly, her heart shattered by the cruel abandonment she had just experienced. Her friend, Lady Bug, watched her with deep concern, terrified that the immense stress and sorrow would make her physically ill. As the city lights of Singapore blurred through her tears, Barbie Girl’s mind drifted back to the very beginning—to August 2016, when Spiderman flew to Indonesia for the first time.

With a clearer mind, she began to re-evaluate the red flags she had previously ignored out of love. She remembered the "gifts" he had brought her from Singapore. It was a bizarre collection of broken items: a dead Motorola tablet, a broken women's watch, a broken men's watch, and a broken Bluetooth speaker that looked like a cheap promotional giveaway for air fresheners. Everything was broken and useless, accompanied by a secondhand sling bag. The only new items were a pair of Hush Puppies panties, a dress, and a Guzheng, a traditional Chinese musical instrument.

She also remembered his staggering selfishness during that first visit. Spiderman had stubbornly attempted to transfer money to her from Singapore. Blinded by his own arrogance and refusing to listen, he tried to send the funds using Barbie Girl’s national ID number (KTP) instead of her actual bank account number. When the transfer predictably failed, he aggressively forced her to call Bank Central Asia (BCA) to sort out his mistake. That hours-long phone call completely drained Barbie Girl's phone credit, costing her hundreds of thousands of rupiah. Spiderman never showed a single shred of remorse or guilt for the chaos and financial loss he caused.

Sitting in the taxi, pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place. Barbie Girl made a firm, unyielding decision: she would never hope for this man again. She realized that despite the emotional manipulation, she had lost nothing of her true worth. They had never engaged in any sexual intimacy; she remained unharmed, pure, and a virgin. Her dignity was intact, and he no longer held power over her soul.

Time passed, and fate brought a sweet twist of poetic justice. In late 2019, Barbie Girl won a trip to Singapore. She packed her bags and joined the group of winners, deliberately keeping Spiderman completely in the dark about her journey. When the group arrived at Universal Studios Singapore, surrounded by laughter and vibrant energy, Barbie Girl took a photograph of herself enjoying the park. She opened her phone and sent the picture directly to Spiderman, accompanied by a powerful message: she was standing in the heart of Singapore, thriving, and proving once and for all that she never needed to rely on him to see the world...

Not long after that vivid dream, the unthinkable happened. Out of nowhere, a WhatsApp message from Spiderman flashed across Barbie Girl’s phone screen. She was stunned, staring at the screen in utter disbelief. Months before, when he first blocked her, she had desperately tried every possible way to reach him. She sent text messages, tried calling through Tango, and searched for his Facebook profile, but met only dead ends and digital walls. Now, he was back.

Keeping the mystical dream and the cloth doll a secret out of fear that he would mock her or get angry, Barbie Girl chose a gentle approach. She simply sent him a photograph—a picture of Spiderman’s photo safely enclosed within the circle of her own prayer beads (tasbih). Touched by the gesture, Spiderman replied with a simple, genuine "thank you." It felt like a fresh start, a sign that the heavy storm had finally passed.

Hope bloomed once more. Soon after, Barbie Girl planned a trip to Singapore accompanied by her 57-year-old friend, Lady Bug. While Lady Bug spent her days exploring the city-state alone, Barbie Girl spent her time with Spiderman. To her relief, he seemed completely changed. He was kind, attentive, and warm—so much so that it convinced Barbie Girl to plan a second trip to Singapore with Lady Bug shortly after.

But the second trip exposed a completely different reality. The illusion of the "changed man" shattered on the very first day. While they were shopping at Mustafa Centre, the moment they reached the cashier, Spiderman suddenly panicked and fled, running away as if terrified he would be asked to pay for her purchases. In truth, Barbie Girl was a kind, independent woman who had no intention of asking for his money.

The bizarre behavior escalated on the second day in Chinatown. Spiderman picked out three T-shirts and aggressively pressured Barbie Girl to buy them, claiming they were gifts for her two older brothers. Knowing she did not want or need them, Barbie Girl refused. Her refusal ignited his explosive temper. Once again, the bitter insults returned. He yelled at her, repeating the cruel words that had broken her before: that she was too old to change, and that an "old dog" would never change.

The final blow came on their third and last day in Singapore. In a fit of unexplained rage, Spiderman did something unimaginably cruel: he abandoned Barbie Girl completely, leaving her stranded on the unfamiliar streets of a foreign country. To make matters worse, before walking away, he demanded back the Singaporean SIM card he had lent her. Stripped of internet access, GPS, and any way to navigate, Barbie Girl was forced to find her way back to the hotel entirely alone, walking blindly through a city that suddenly felt cold and ruthless...

The Red Thread and the Spiderman: A True Story of Love and Betrayal (Part 1)

By Stella | True Story Series

Life has a strange way of weaving destiny. At the end of 2015, a digital spark ignited a connection across the ocean. Through the Badoo dating site, a 38-year-old Chinese-Indonesian woman, whom we shall call Barbie Girl, crossed paths with a 54-year-old Chinese-Malaysian man, code-named Spiderman. He was a professional working at Singapore's Changi Airport. Despite the distance, a profound bond quickly formed, built on daily routines and the shared dream of marriage.

Their love was anchored in the beauty of simple, honest daily life. Every single day, they would exchange photos of their meals. Barbie Girl, with pure honesty, would send pictures of her humble daily dishes: simple rice and vegetables. In return, Spiderman would share his meals, usually consisting of rice and chicken. For an entire year, this digital courtship blossomed. They talked about the future, planned their wedding, and counted down the days until they could meet.

That moment came in August 2016. Spiderman flew to Indonesia. For three beautiful days, they existed in the real world, validating the love they had built online. When he flew back to Singapore, the daily communication continued. However, the warmth did not last. A few months later, the texts became scarce. The tone changed. Spiderman began raging without reason, suddenly calling off the wedding plans.

The confusion turned into heartbreak during a strange exchange on WhatsApp. Spiderman texted about his desire to take a leave of absence to visit the ancient stone temples in the Philippines. Surprised and excited, thinking he was finally taking time off, Barbie Girl reply suggested that spending his vacation in Indonesia would be much more pleasant.

The response she received was a wave of pure cruelty. Spiderman erupted in anger, insulting her bitterly. He told her that an "old dog" like her would never change. He claimed he could never be with her because she could not speak English, boasting that in his home country of Malaysia, everyone spoke English and Chinese. He then forced her into total submission, demanding she admit that she was a stubborn old dog. Broken and desperate to save the relationship, Barbie Girl humbled herself, uttering those demeaning words against her own dignity. Shortly after, Spiderman blocked her entirely—leaving her in complete darkness, without answers, even as she was actively inquiring everywhere about wedding makeup venues.

Days turned into months. Despite the sudden abandonment, Barbie Girl and her mother never stopped praying for Spiderman's well-being. Then, a mystical intervention occurred. Barbie Girl had a vivid dream. A mysterious voice instructed her to perform a ritual: create a cloth doll, insert Spiderman’s name and birthdate inside it, and embroider a heart onto the doll's chest. She was told to wrap the doll tightly with a red string exactly 49 times and sleep with it under her pillow. The instructions were clear—do not untie it until Spiderman appears in her dreams.

For months, the doll remained hidden beneath her pillow. Until one night, the vision finally arrived. In the dream, Spiderman appeared, heavily intoxicated. Barbie Girl stood waiting beneath the dim glow of a streetlight, wearing a striking yellow dress with a black V-style accent on the sleeves. Seeing him stumble, she reached out, supporting his weight, and guided Spiderman out of the darkness and toward the light...

Behind the Brush: When 'Free Makeup' is Actually Sabotage

Behind the Brush: When 'Free Makeup' is Actually Sabotage

Published in Relationships & Life Lessons • 5 min read

"I used to believe that being a supportive friend meant saying 'yes' to every favor. It took me three painful experiences to realize that sometimes, favors are just a disguise for public humiliation."

We all have that one friend who is trying to build a career, and as good friends, our natural instinct is to support them. Years ago, I had a large circle of friends, all with different passions. One of them decided to become a Makeup Artist (MUA) and opened her own salon. Naturally, I was thrilled for her.

One day, she approached me and asked if I could be her makeup model. Because we were close friends, she didn't pay me, and I didn't mind at all. I genuinely wanted to help her build her portfolio. I stayed positive, sat in her chair, and let her do her magic. Or so I thought.

The Repeated 'Bad' Makeovers

When I looked in the mirror after the first session, the result was shocking. The makeup didn't suit my face at all. It looked messy, cakey, and frankly, I looked much better with a completely bare face. I brushed it off, thinking, "She is still learning, everyone makes mistakes."

But then it happened a second time. Then a third time. In total, she did my makeup for free more than three times, and every single time, the result was consistently terrible. What hurt the most was that she proudly uploaded these photos of my face onto her professional Instagram account.

The Painful Realization

For a long time, I kept practicing positive thinking. I told myself she just had a bad day or that the lighting was off. But one day, I decided to scroll through her Instagram feed. That was the moment reality hit me like a truck.

Looking at her feed, every other model looked absolutely stunning, flawless, and professionally done. I was the only one whose makeup looked like a complete disaster. It wasn't a lack of skill; she clearly knew how to do makeup.

That was when I finally woke up from my toxic optimism. She wasn't using me as a model to build her portfolio. She was using me to show her followers—many of whom were my mutual friends—that I looked ugly. It was a calculated move to lower my self-esteem while boosting her own ego under the guise of "friendship."

What I Learned About Toxic Friends

  • Trust your gut, not just your optimism: If something feels off repeatedly, it usually is. Stop making excuses for people who constantly lower your value.
  • 'Free' can cost your dignity: Don't let people use the friendship card to exploit you or treat you like a doormat.
  • True friends lift you up: A real friend will never post something that publicly humiliates you while making themselves look good.

Moving Forward

Realizing that a friend intentionally tried to make you look bad is a heavy pill to swallow. But today, I am no longer that naive girl who sits silently in a chair just to be sabotaged. I learned to set firm boundaries, untag myself from toxic narratives, and walk away from people who secretly pray for my downfall.

To anyone reading this: Your kindness is a gift. Do not waste it on people who only use it as a weapon against you. You are beautiful, with or without their brush.
