'Virtual Breast' for better cancer detection

A computer-generated and hi-tech 3D 'virtual breast' software, which would be mimicking the intricacy of a real organ would significantly improve cancer detection, according to scientists.

Many medical professionals are increasingly encouraging women to choose mammograms and also ultrasound elastography for pinpointing possible tumours.

These can analyse stiffness of tissue given the fact cancer tissues are stiff but the recent innovation of virtual breast is seen as breakthrough for scientists.

Breast cancer not increased by them

According to a study it is coming out that breast cancer will not be caused by these seven things. Researchers after studying women suffering from breast cancer, found that avoiding food, products, behaviours is not the best way to keep away from breast cancer.

Doctors say many are under misconception that wearing an underwire bra, getting breast implants,Wearing deodorant or antiperspirant, drinking coffee, having a mammogram, MRI, or ultrasound, living near power lines, using chemical hair straighteners may cause breast cancer. But researchers say after conducting various tests, they found that women's fears about the above being the causes for breast cancer are uncalled for.

Expanding waistlines may increase breast cancer risk

A study co-authored by an Indian-origin professor has found a link between expanding waistlines and breast cancer risk for women between 20s and post-menopausal age.

Going up one skirt size every 10 years was associated with a 33 percent greater risk of developing breast cancer after the menopause, the findings of the Britain-based study showed.

Going up two skirt sizes in the same period was associated with a 77 percent greater risk.

The researchers estimated that the five year absolute risk of post-menopausal breast cancer rises from 1 in 61 to 1 in 51 with each increase in skirt size every 10 years.

"Although the exact mechanism of these relationships need to be better understood, there is a suggestion that body fat around the waist is more metabolically active than adipose tissue elsewhere," said Usha Menon from University College London in Britain.

"Extra fat is known to boost levels of the female hormone oestrogen, on which many breast cancer cells rely for fuel," the study authors added.

The findings were based on almost 93,000 women taking part in the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) in England.

The women were all aged over 50, had gone through menopause and did not have breast cancer when they entered the study between 2005 and 2010.

During the monitoring period, 1090 women developed breast cancer.

As expected, infertility treatment and family history of breast/ovarian cancer were significantly associated with a heightened risk of being diagnosed with the disease.

Increases in skirt size, however, emerged as the strongest predictor of breast cancer risk.

Women should be scared of wearing bra

The beauty aid, the ubiquitous brassiere, has long been suspected of being dangerous.  That long term usage enhances the risk of breast cancer.

Post menopausal ladies were feared to be more vulnerable for this disease, that bra is the culprit.

New research says that wearing a bra even if it is used all the year round, DOES NOT INCREASE the risk of breast cancer.

It was suspected that the higher incidence of breast cancer in developed countries over developing countries could be because of the difference in bra wearing patters.

A research study found no evidence to conclude that wearing a bra increases  a woman's risk for breast cancer.

They also said that the risk was similar no matter how many hours per day  women wear a bra or at what age they first began wearing it.
