Suffering Behind the Fence:
When Neighbors Turn into Executioners

A reflection on an elderly couple, a leaking roof, and the water that was never meant to be a weapon.

A note before you read All names, locations, and identifying details have been completely altered to protect everyone's privacy. This is a social critique and personal reflection based on a narrative shared with me. There is no intention to defame, slander, or attack any specific institution, government body, or individual — any resemblance to real persons or entities is purely coincidental. This is meant to encourage self-reflection, not hatred.

I came across the story of an elderly couple living in a small town in Malaysia. A local elderly man and his foreign-born wife. And what I heard broke me — not just because of their poverty, but because of how the people closest to them treated them.

One

Life Without Water, Electricity, or Peace

Imagine living in a house with a leaking roof, cracked walls, no electricity, and not a single drop of running water.

For years, this couple survived by collecting rainwater in jerrycans to drink, cook, and bathe. During dry seasons, they rationed every single drop. To charge their phones, they walked miles to the nearest mall. Along the way, they scavenged for loose change on the ground and picked fallen fruits from roadside trees just to have something to eat.

They aren't lazy. They are silent warriors slowly being crushed by circumstance.
Two

The "Kindness" That Turned Into a Trap

At one point, desperate for clean water, the elderly couple gathered their courage and asked their neighbor next door for permission to use their water supply.

At first, the neighbor's mother-in-law — the elderly matriarch — took pity on them and agreed. But there was one condition: every month, the elderly couple had to pay the water bill at the post office to cover their usage. They agreed, heavy-hearted but grateful. Paying was better than thirsting.

The Betrayal Behind the Hose

However, permission that was supposed to be their lifeline turned into a fresh wound.

The female neighbor — the daughter-in-law — shamelessly exploited the situation. Instead of helping them lighten the load, she started using that very same water for her own family's daily needs, almost every single day.

But here is the kicker: she never paid a single cent toward the bill.

The monthly water bills skyrocketed. The elderly couple, already penniless, could no longer bear the cost. They fell into arrears. Eventually, they lost access to the water connection entirely.

They were back to square one. Back to rainwater and empty jerrycans.
Four

Daily Screams: From Protector to Tormentor

If only the story ended there, perhaps they could have found peace. But it got worse.

From that day on, the neighbor — the wife — changed completely. With eyes full of resentment and hatred, she started screaming like a possessed person every single day. Loud, piercing, violent shouts that echoed across the fence.

Why was she so furious?

  • She hated the sight of the elderly couple's crumbling house.
  • She hated seeing them collect rainwater in jerrycans.
  • She even hated seeing stray cats taking shelter on the elderly couple's porch.

Every day, she would threaten them:

"I'm going to report you to the authorities!" — "I'm reporting you to the Ministry of Health!" — "I'm reporting you to the religious council!"

She wanted these elderly people evicted, punished, or at least intimidated out of the neighborhood.

Remember, this elderly couple already lives in constant fear — they are forced to share their collapsing house with a mentally unstable family member who showers naked in public spaces. Now, on top of that, they have to endure psychological terror from the neighbor next door just for trying to survive.

They aren't living in a home. They are living in a prison of fear.

Reflection: Neighbors Should Be Protectors

In our communities, neighbors are supposed to be the first line of humanity. We see them when we leave the house and see them when we return. In many cultures, a good neighbor is considered closer than a distant relative.

A neighbor should be a protector. When you see the house next door falling apart, a protector offers help, or at least peace. When you hear your neighbor is thirsty, a protector shares water.

But in this case, it is the opposite. This neighbor exploited the elderly couple's desperation — using their water without paying — and then became their executioner, screaming threats at them daily, destroying their last shred of dignity.

Poverty is not a crime. Collecting rainwater is not a sin. A leaking roof is not a disgrace.

The real disgrace is the oppressive, unjust behavior of someone who takes advantage of the weak — and then judges them with loud shouts and threats.

A Final Plea

To anyone reading this, let's ask ourselves a tough question: when we see a neighbor struggling, do we become the hand that lifts them up, or the foot that kicks them down?

This elderly couple isn't asking us to build them a palace. They just want:

  • · A roof that doesn't leak.
  • · Clean water to drink.
  • · Peace in their remaining years.

Please, don't let them die slowly — not just from hunger or thirst, but from the cruelty of the people around them.

If you cannot help, at least stop screaming. Because for those who have already fallen, your screams aren't just noise — they are final blows that destroy the soul.

If this story moved you, the smallest act of help — a kind word, a shared post, a real gesture toward a struggling neighbor near you — carries further than we often think. If you are inspired to help, please reach out to legitimate social organizations in your area.
