Nowadays, who doesn’t dream of becoming a social media influencer? Every young girl seems to aspire to thousands of followers, glamorous content, and the thrill of brand collaborations. But the reality behind the scenes can be far more dangerous than it appears. Not every opportunity that pops up on Facebook or WhatsApp is genuine—many campaigns are outright scams.
We recently had the chance to speak with a well-known influencer in Malaysia about her shocking experience.
“Yes, I was completely fooled by a woman named Yeleng,” she revealed. “I first knew her from her WhatsApp profile. She reached out to me personally and invited me to join a WhatsApp group. She claimed it was a simple campaign: just upload the video provided by Ulike Singapore, and I would get paid RM50.”
Excited but cautious, she followed the instructions and uploaded the video. But instead of receiving payment, Yeleng made increasingly absurd demands. “She asked me to add Chinese New Year music to the video I had already uploaded. How could I do that after it was already posted? It was impossible.”
A few days later, Yeleng pushed for even more. She asked the influencer to accept a “paid partnership permit” from Ulike Singapore—something entirely unrelated to the original campaign. “I refused immediately. The RM50 was clearly meant only for uploading the video. Any additional work would, of course, require extra compensation.”
“This is a common trick used by scammers in the influencer world,” she explained. “They lure you in with easy money and then invent excuses to avoid paying. They exploit the excitement of young influencers chasing opportunities, knowing that most will hesitate to fight back.”
Her advice is simple but crucial: be extremely careful with campaigns shared on Facebook or WhatsApp. Not everyone claiming to be a brand agent or marketing professional is trustworthy. Protect your time, energy, and creativity—don’t let anyone take advantage of your hard work.
Her story is a stark reminder: in the glamorous world of social media influence, not everything that glitters is gold.
